Okay so I previously posted about my research on cheaper cell phone plans. I'd like to touch on it one more time as I have found more information. I hope you don't mind. I've recently come across a new prepaid cell service (I mean New as in only 2,000 likes on Facebook new) called ting.
Ting is Awesome. It's pretty new but the concepts they're working on are incredible. This plan is the money saver's dream. Alright, so let me tell you more about their service itself instead of continuing on and on about how awesome it is. Ting is a Build Your Own Plan prepaid mobile service on the Sprint network. There are no set plans. You go in, pick how many minutes you want, how many messages you want, and how many megabytes you want and then pay for them. Now here's the best part, at the end of the month, if you haven't used everything you paid for, you get credit for everything you didn't use towards next month's bill! It works the other way around too, if you go over the amount you picked in any area, it just bumps you up to the next bracket without any overage fees. I agree with ting when they say it's dumb for a cell phone service to punish you for using their services more than you had expected. I love this plan because every month is different. Some months you make more calls and other months you text more, but you always only pay for what you actually use.
The Only thing holding me back from jumping right into this plan is that they are not yet a BYOD (bring your own device) program. They Are however beta testing it and working towards allowing Sprint phones with clean ESNs onto their network. As soon as they've got this streamlined, I Am In.
Now for a bit on what a waste of money cell phones are. Seriously guys, prepaid plans! Get yourself a tablet/kindle/ipad that does all the cool stuff with wifi and run away from data as fast as you can! Get a cheap feature/basic phone that works and use it for texting and calling. Better yet, get a VoIP phone and only buy a few minutes on your cell phone for Emergencies Only. This is a no-brainer. The world is so caught up in having all of their stuff in one place when it would be so much cheaper to split it apart: GPS (one time buy) for your car, tablet/kindle/ipad (one time buy) for all of the capabilities of a smartphone without paying for data, VoIP phone (magicJack Plus $30/yr) for unlimited calling nationwide, and a basic phone (less than $30/mo without data) for texting and Emergency Only calls.
Watch your monthly payments come down and watch the money you save grow.
